When the Path Seems Closed

There is a narrow path through my woods that almost disappears every summer.

By July, the grass grows tall, the ferns lean into the trail, and blackberry vines begin reaching across it. If you didn't already know the path was there, you might think it ended. It would be easy to turn around and assume there was nowhere left to go.

But the path is still there.

Sometimes all it takes is one more step.

This week reminded me of that.

Life has a way of placing obstacles in front of the things we care about most. We make plans, pour our hearts into them, and then suddenly find ourselves standing in front of what feels like a locked gate. In those moments, it's tempting to believe the journey has ended.

Nature tells a different story.

A river doesn't stop because a fallen tree blocks its way. It bends. It searches. It finds another course, and before long, it's flowing again.

The old oak outside my garden has weathered storms that would have broken younger trees. It didn't survive because the storms stopped coming. It survived because its roots reached deeper than the wind could reach.

Maybe that's the lesson this week.

Not every closed door is the end of the story. Sometimes it's simply an invitation to look a little closer, ask another question, or take another path that we hadn't noticed before.

Growth rarely follows a straight line. Gardens certainly don't. Every season asks us to adapt—to move a plant into more sunlight, to prune what no longer serves, or to trust that a seed buried beneath the soil is still quietly doing its work.

When we meet resistance, we have a choice. We can stop where the path seems to end, or we can gently push aside the tall grass and see what waits just beyond it.

More often than not, the path was there all along.

As you walk through your own week, I hope you'll remember that progress isn't always measured by how quickly you arrive. Sometimes it's measured by your willingness to keep walking, even when the trail isn't easy to see.

Until next Thursday...

May your cup stay warm, your hands stay in the soil, and may you always find the courage to take one more step through the garden gate.
