The Dreams We Didn't Know We Had
We've all heard the familiar sayings.
Dream big. Follow your dreams. Chase your dreams. Never stop dreaming.
They're wonderful sentiments, aren't they? The idea that somewhere inside each of us is a grand vision of what we want our lives to become, just waiting for us to find the courage to pursue it.
But what if we don't have a grand vision?
What if some of the most meaningful things we create in our lives begin without a dream at all?
Sometimes, they begin with nothing more than curiosity. A passing interest. A quiet feeling that something deserves a little more of our attention.
And sometimes, that feeling simply refuses to go away.
We push it aside because life is busy. Because the timing isn't right. Because there are bills to pay, responsibilities to manage, and a hundred perfectly reasonable explanations for why we shouldn't pursue something new.
Yet somewhere beneath all those practical considerations, that little voice continues to whisper.
What if?
A couple of years ago, I found myself in just such a place.
I'd developed an interest in herbal medicine, but pursuing that interest meant investing time and money into something I wasn't entirely sure about. I kept coming across opportunities to learn more, and something about them continued to pull at me.
During a conversation with another practitioner at an event, I mentioned how strongly I felt drawn toward this particular path.
Her advice was simple.
If your intuition is speaking that strongly, perhaps you should listen.
And so I did.
There wasn't a grand business plan. No vision of where it might eventually lead. I simply wanted to learn how to work with herbs and plants, to understand their traditional uses, and to create homemade remedies for my family.
One small step led to another.
And another.
Until somewhere along the way, something began to grow that I hadn't originally imagined.
Isn't that often how life works?
We tend to think we need to know exactly where we're going before we take the first step. We want a plan, a destination, and preferably some reassurance that everything will turn out the way we hope.
But life rarely offers those guarantees.
Sometimes the path only becomes visible as we walk it.
And perhaps that's where the garden has something to teach us.
Not every garden begins with a carefully drawn design. Sometimes it starts with a single plant that catches our attention. We find a place for it, tend to it, and watch what happens.
Before long, we discover another plant we'd like to grow. Then another.
Seasons pass. Some things flourish. Others struggle. We learn what needs more sunlight, what requires patience, and what simply wasn't meant to thrive in that particular patch of soil.
And one day, we look around and realize that what began with a single planting has become something entirely different.
Something we never planned.
Something we might never have imagined.
Of course, not every interest needs to become a lifelong pursuit. Not every curiosity needs to turn into a career, a business, or some grand accomplishment.
Sometimes the joy is simply in discovering something new.
But occasionally, we encounter something that feels different. Something that continues to call to us, even when we aren't quite sure why.
Perhaps those are the moments worth paying attention to.
Because while there's nothing wrong with dreaming big, there's also something beautiful about allowing a dream to find us along the way.
We don't always need to see the entire garden to appreciate the possibility of what might grow.
Sometimes all we need is the willingness to plant that first seed.
And trust ourselves enough to see where it leads.
Until next time, tend to what calls to you. You never know what might grow.
