What Grows Beneath the Surface
Welcome to Through the Garden Gate—a weekly
letter from Of Herb & Stone where we slow down together for a few quiet moments.
When we admire a beautiful garden, we rarely think about the work hidden beneath the soil.
We notice the blossoms, the fragrance, and the colors dancing in the breeze. We don't see the roots stretching quietly through the earth, gathering strength long before a single flower appears.
Life has a way of working like that, too.
This week reminded me that some of our most important work is the kind no one else ever sees.
Sometimes it looks like learning a new skill.
Sometimes it looks like making one more difficult decision.
Sometimes it looks like quietly building something long before anyone knows it exists.
For me, it was hours spent preparing something I've dreamed about for a long time. There were no wildflowers or woodland walks this week—just countless small decisions, careful planning, and the kind of work that doesn't make for exciting photographs.
But it mattered.
Every thoughtful choice became another stone in the path.
Every finished task became another root reaching a little deeper.
It's easy to believe that progress only counts when it's visible. Yet nature reminds us otherwise. A seed spends a long time beneath the surface before anyone celebrates the bloom.
Maybe we're meant to trust those hidden seasons.
Maybe they're where the strongest growth begins.
So if this week has felt quiet... if your efforts have gone unnoticed... if you've wondered whether all your work is making any difference...
Keep tending your garden.
Keep watering the seeds no one else can see.
One day, someone will admire the flowers without ever realizing how much love was growing beneath them all along.
Until next Thursday...
May you find peace in the unseen work, joy in the simple moments, and quiet confidence that every small step is helping something beautiful take root.
With gratitude,
Mary
