Walking the Path
Updated: Aug 4

This week, I found myself thinking about the paths we walk.
Not the ones through the woods or the winding trails that disappear beneath the trees, but the paths we quietly create in our everyday lives. The ones built from ordinary moments, repeated over and over until they become as familiar as home.
When we first begin tending a garden, everything feels like work. We prepare the soil, plant the seeds, pull weeds, water faithfully, and wonder if anything is happening beneath the surface. We dream about the blooms while staring at what still looks like bare ground.
But one day, almost without realizing it, we stop rushing from one task to the next.
Instead, we simply walk.
The path is there because we’ve traveled it so many times before.
This week reminded me that not every season is meant to be filled with constant doing. Sometimes the greatest gift we can give ourselves is permission to trust the work we’ve already done.
My granddaughter has been away visiting family this week. The first night was difficult, and like any grandmother, I worried. I wanted to fix things from miles away, even though I couldn’t. But tonight, when we talked on the phone, she shared stories about shopping, getting her hair cut, meeting a horse, and all the little adventures that made her smile.
It reminded me that love doesn’t always mean holding on tightly.
Sometimes it means letting someone walk their own path while trusting they’ll find joy along the way.
I also caught myself thinking about how often I measure my days by what I accomplished. Did I finish the project? Did I make enough tea? Did I cross everything off my list?
This evening, none of those things happened.
Instead, I simply listened.
And somehow, that felt just as important.
Nature has a beautiful way of teaching us that growth doesn’t happen only when we can see it. Roots stretch quietly beneath the earth long before flowers appear. Trees spend years deepening their foundations before their branches reach toward the sky.
Perhaps we’re meant to live that way too.
Not every day has to produce something visible.
Some days are simply meant to deepen our roots.
As I closed this day, I realized that the path beneath my feet didn’t appear overnight. It was created one small step at a time. Every conversation, every act of kindness, every cup of tea shared with a friend, every seed planted with hope—they all become part of the trail that leads us forward.
Maybe that’s enough.
Maybe, for today, we don’t need to hurry toward the next destination.
Maybe we only need to notice the beauty of the path we’re already walking.
Until next Thursday…
May your roots grow deep, your burdens grow light, and may you find peace in every step along your own garden path.
